Back in December, right before the New Year, I decided that I would take on a New Year’s resolution and then abandon it in a month or so, as is tradition. I didn’t want to put in too much thought or effort though so I looked at my current surroundings at the time. I saw my Wii, and my friends, including Audie. I decided to get in shape using Wii Fit so I looked at Ebay listings and found the game for $3 but the balance board was much pricier. I expressed my concern to my friends and later Audie handed me a balance board his mom purchased and then never used. He said I could just have it since his family would never use it. I shed a manly tear, thanked him, and got to work after the New Year came.
I wasn’t overly impressed with the graphics from a game that came out the same year Drake and Josh ended (2007), but I suppose stunning graphics wasn’t the point of the game. Immediately upon starting, you meet your balance board in digital form who asks you to step on them and that makes me very uncomfortable until it explains that it’s to test your balance and weight. It immediately concludes that my weight is average for a male of 23 years and that my balance is that of a 40 year old man. So, I started off very insecure.
After that you can pick a trainer, your options are a male and female. I was pretty sure there’s no difference but I ended up picking the woman because I didn’t feel weird watching her exercise although her scolding of my awful balance made me feel bad. But I digress, as you do exercise you earn “points” for every minute of exercise you do which in turn unlock more exercises and I aimed for roughly 30-45 minutes a day so I was racking up points.
On January 31st, I knew I had to give up my resolution by the next day to get the full experience of the New Year but my balance still hadn’t improved so I decided to fool around in the settings menu. I quickly realized I should have come there on the first day because there was a calibration setting. I clicked on it and it recalibrated my balance board. I hopped on to do my daily exercises and suddenly my balance was much better. Not perfect because as a human I am prone to err but I wish I had learned this early on so that I wasn’t focused on improving balance and could have worked on other areas instead.
In the end, I did drop Wii Fit on February 1st and felt satisfaction on giving up my resolution but after a week I started missing the feeling of being sore (like the good sore, not the bad sore). I hadn’t felt it since I took PE in high school and really missed it. So I did the unthinkable I trashed my idea of trashing my resolution and still use it every now and then when I have a surplus of energy, forever chasing the dopamine rush of my muscles hurting. This isn’t the end, this is the beginning of how I get Wii Fit.
