My name is Ben Rodrigue and I make videos about video games and I write blog posts about the same games for a class I took.
For the love of all this is good, check out my YouTube Channel.
Playing and Scripting.
People never, but I wish they did, ask me “Ben, how do you make your videos?” And I would tell them, “It’s a process.” But what I would mean is, first I’ll find a game that I like or at least have a vague recollection of and replay it while filming it. Sometimes setting up shots I know will be needed in the video. And I’ll take breaks in between to write my script. When I’ve assembled everything I need, I’ll start editing.
Editing and Live Action
Editing doesn’t take as long as most people would think, mostly because most people think it takes weeks. I certainly did. First things first though, I record all my lines that I wrote in my script then lay them over the captured game footage. Generally the hardest part is doing live action. I’m not alone very often so it’s hard to get it quiet enough to film. Eventually though, I always find a way to make it work. Once I do that, I add them to the video then overlay possibly stolen music over it. I’m not an expert on copyright.
Thumbnail and Final Edits
There is one person I trust to always give me rock solid advice. Before I make a video live, I’ll always ask for his input and then do my best to fix whatever I can. But sometimes he’s busy and it’ll take a few days, and that’s the time when I generally make a thumbnail. If I’m busy I’ll take a generic photo from the game and lay myself over it in an interesting pose and try to add engaging text. If that doesn’t work, I figure something out and then upload it. I’ll get almost no views and contemplate how I wasted my time but had fun along the way!
